Lab-Grown Diamonds

WHAT ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS?

Lab Grown diamonds are diamonds grown in a laboratory by scientists. They share the same physical and chemical composition of a natural diamond and only difference between the two is that natural diamonds are made under the surface of the earth and lab diamonds are made in a controlled
laboratory.

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS REAL?

Short answer Hell Yes!! Lab-grown diamonds share an identical chemical composition to natural diamonds. Both share the same physical and optical characteristics and are carbon in crystalline form. The only difference between the two is that while natural diamonds are formed below the surface of the earth lab-grown diamonds are made in a laboratory in a controlled environment.

DID YOU KNOW?

Lab Grown Diamonds have all the same physical, chemical, and optical qualities as mined diamonds.

HOW ARE LAB DIAMONDS GROWN?

It is crucial that we understand how natural diamonds are grown as science has recreated a similar process to grow diamonds in laboratories. Natural diamonds are formed when carbon dioxide deep below the surface of the earth crystallises under intense heat and pressure. These crystals are brought closer to the surface of the earth by volcanic eruptions where they are mined by humans. This whole process takes billions of years. Lab Grown Diamond recreates this intense heat and pressure in a controlled environment to grow diamonds. There are two main process used to grow diamonds are the HPHT Process (High Pressure High Temperature) and the CVD Process (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

In the HPHT process mechanical presses apply extreme pressure and temperature on a diamond seed. Carbon atoms precipitate on the diamond seed layer by layer over the course of a few days forming a rough uncut diamond.

In the CVD process diamond seeds are placed in a sealed reactor and introduced to a mix of gasses that are caron rich. Microwave energy is used to heat these gasses causing the molecules in the gas to break apart and the carbon atoms to bond to the seed growing them a layer at a time to form a rough uncut diamond.

THE COMPLICATED WORLD OF DIAMOND TERMINOLOGY

Customers often get overwhelmed by the various terminologies used when buying jewellery. There are Moissanites, Cubic Zirconia, Lab Grown diamonds and Natural Diamonds – all being passed off as diamond jewelry. Unlike clothes or shoes which will eventually be discarded, diamond jewelry is an heirloom passed on from one generation to the other. We hence feel it important to clear the air on what is essentially a simple topic

Similarities and Differences Between Natural Diamonds and Lab Grown Diamonds

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds share the same physical, chemical, and optical characteristics with the only difference being that natural diamonds are formed under the surface of the earth and Lab Grown diamonds are made in a controlled environment in a laboratory. Natural diamonds are significantly more expensive than their lab-grown counterparts despite having so different except their origin

Similarities and Differences Between Lab Grown Diamonds and Diamond Simulants like Cubic Zirconia

There is absolutely no similarity between a Cubic Zirconia and a Lab Grown Diamond. Cubic Zirconia are cheap imitations of diamonds lacking the hardness and brilliance of a diamond. A Cubic Zirconia is chemically totally different and in fact is not even considered a gemstone as it is not found in nature. It sparkles much less than a diamond and can be chipped and broken quite easily. On the other hand a lab grown diamond shares the same physical, chemical and optical characteristics as that of a natural diamond.

Similarities and Differences Between Lab Grown Diamond and Moissanites

Moissanite is a completely different gem made of silicon carbide and is significantly cheaper than a diamond. They are not as hard as a diamond and are of a much lower color. Unlike diamonds under light Moissanites emit yellow and green tints and do not sparkle like a diamond

DID YOU KNOW?

A diamond is the hardest known substance to mankind. Only a diamond can scratch another diamond.

HOW ARE LAB GROWN DIAMOND GRADED?

Just like natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds are also graded by independent laboratories for the 4C’s of a diamond – Cut, Clarity, Color and Carat These independent laboratories like GIA (Gemmological Institute of America), IGI ( International Gemmological Institute) and Independent Laboratories of NY issue certificates specifying the origin of these diamonds as originating from a laboratory while using the same grading process as is done with natural diamonds. At La Joya most of our jewelry is assessed and authenticated by expert Gemmologists from Independent Laboratories and comes with a unique certificate that you can verify online.
